Bentley Priory Museum – Commercial Website Photography

Bentley Priory Museum were looking to update their website imagery and came to me with a requirement for casual imagery, to capture people looking around the museum, as well formal shots of all of their rooms.  Exhibits as well as artefacts were shot to give a full appreciation of the environment.

You feel totally immersed in the era when you step inside their museum, it really is astonishing.  It is a magnificent building which boasts an ornate sweeping staircase, intricately designed and painted ceilings and spectacular chandeliers. To the rear it has views across the countryside which really add something special to the whole experience.

Bentley Museum had arranged models of their target age groups to look around the museum.  Parents walked with their children around the museum absorbing the history, and later the children were let loose in the art room downstairs where they created flight-inspired works of art to adorn the walls of the museum.  We had a great time getting the children involved.  Meanwhile the formal shots of the rooms were to really showcase the details they had spent a very long time restoring, paying homage to those that flew during the wars.

A High Dynamic Range photography technique was used to ensure the full light and shade of the formal interior shots was captured.

All the images from this shoot, as well as others commissioned since, can be found at their website just here – Bentley Priory Museum

Campaign Magazine Editorial Photography Shoot

Haymarket run a number of titles, both online and print. For this shoot I was to cover a feature for their online and print publication, Campaign.  I was needed to document the day in the life of a winner of their recent competition.  Jonathan had won a competition and his prize, as chosen by him as a keen cook himself, was to work alongside renowned chef Daniel Clifford at Midsummer House in Cambridge.  The brief was to capture a slice of the day with Jonathan, as well as documenting his time with Daniel as he took direction while creating some dishes.  A thoroughly enjoyable shoot, although at times a little cramped, after all the last thing you want in a working kitchen is a 6 ft  guy with 2 cameras round his neck!  I managed to stay clear of hot stoves and busy chefs though.

The article was published online at Campaign Live’s Website and on Brand Republic’s site, as well as in print for Campaign Magazine.

Waitrose Weekend Magazine | Editorial Photography

Waitrose Weekend Editorial shoot

My first assignment for Waitrose’s Weekend Magazine.

I was called, very last minute, to cover a feature for their section called “My Weekend”.  This is a section where they interview people from all walks of life to talk about what they do that’s different at their weekend.  With one day’s notice, my brief was to get to the Lifeboat Station at Caister, Norfolk, just a couple miles north of Great Yarmouth, and get an environmental portrait but without it being too posed.  This is usually a straight forward task, and at a Lifeboat Station there would be plenty of backdrops available.  Having checked in at the office I met Paul, he was a friendly guy, but he had a job to do and I, understandably, had to fit in with his routine of setting up the Lifeboat for the upcoming drill that morning.  Paul was very accommodating but I had to pick my moment.

In between his duties, and during constant rain, he called me over and said we had a few minutes as he had to launch the boat, although Waitrose would only use one shot I had to give them a wide choice to select from.  I climbed up on the boat and, with rain now pelting down, we quickly moved through a number of shots, while balancing on a wet Lifeboat.  Five minutes later, that’s it…we were done.  I hopped down from the boat and set off back home to upload the proof shots to the client.  A fresh and invigorating, if slightly wet, way to start your Sunday morning for sure.

NHS STOPtober Campaign Photography

I was delighted to be asked to cover an initiative for the NHS recently called STOPtober.  This is a key campaign the NHS run to help smokers STOP – simple right?

Well, many people find it hard to stop smoking so the NHS has a range of services and support to help.  It’s a fantastic idea as smoking related diseases are a massive burden on the NHS, so any opportunity to reduce that burden and live a healthier life is an opportunity worth taking. It all starts with a 28 day challenge with full ongoing support.  A bite size way to tackle an addiction.

The brief

The NHS spend millions fighting the effects of smoking each year and so wanted to put a more friendly and personable spin to the message this year.  So, as well photographing the team and store management of the local ASDA store to show just how much support is being given, they also wanted imagery of those affected.  And so we were invited to sit in on a one-to-one session held in a private room in the store.  During this session a man who had been a heavy smoker for many years was received coaching, information and updates on what is available and also sharing his experiences of giving up gradually.  As, ultimately, you’re more likely to give up with support and when moving away from cigarettes gradually, instead of just going cold turkey. During these sessions their readings are taken to see how much their breathing has improved and how the nicotine in their system has been reducing. The images taken are set to be used in local collateral to drive home the message of the personal support that is given.
